More than half a million Russian troops have been killed in Ukraine since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, according to Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton, Chief of the UK’s Defense Staff. These fatalities represent part of an estimated 1.5 million total Russian casualties.
Knighton stated that Russia’s larger military is struggling to achieve significant advances on the battlefield, with Western officials and analysts noting a considerable slowdown in the rate of Russian advances this year. Russia has also sustained "enormous" losses in military materiel, including over 10,000 armored vehicles, approximately 3,000 air defense and artillery systems, and more than 370 aircraft and helicopters.
Ukraine has intensified its own long-range drone campaign, targeting facilities deep within Russia, which strains air defense systems across the country. On Thursday, Ukraine’s military reported striking a refinery over 1,800 miles away in Siberia, aiming to disrupt Russia’s oil sector. These strikes have contributed to fuel shortages in Russia, a major energy producer, leading to record low oil product exports in August and increased fuel imports from countries like South Korea and India, according to the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air.
Overnight between Thursday and Friday, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported intercepting 777 Ukrainian drones across 16 Russian regions, as well as over occupied Crimea and the waters of the Azov and Caspian seas. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that long-range strikes hit eight Russian regions, including facilities in the Saratov region, stating the attacks were "aimed at reducing Russia’s capacity to wage war."
In parallel with these developments, Russia has broadened its air war within Ukraine. Russian drones targeted roadside gas stations in Kyiv for a second consecutive day Friday, resulting in two fatalities and six injuries at one site, according to the prosecutor's office. Russian strikes on urban gas stations, often located near front lines, have intensified in recent months as part of a campaign to disrupt civilian life and undermine morale. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described these actions as a systematic effort to maximize casualties and spread fear. In Pavlohrad, a city in central Ukraine, five residents were killed and 67 wounded in daylight Russian drone attacks near shopping malls the previous day. Overnight drone attacks in Zaporizhzhia injured a woman and her son, striking an apartment block and a shopping mall. In Dnipro, 12 people were wounded in a daylight Russian attack on Friday.
Neither Moscow nor Kyiv regularly disclose their battlefield losses. The figures provided by the UK defense chief align with estimates published by the Ukrainian military, though Russian officials have not immediately commented on these numbers.
