A 25-year-old British dance teacher, Lewis Potter, is being detained in Taiwan after an unspecified 'item' was found in a suitcase he was carrying. Potter has been in custody since June, according to his family, who have expressed deep distress over the lack of contact and the prolonged uncertainty.

Potter's mother, Andrina Law, stated that her son agreed to transport the suitcase for a trusted friend who had to withdraw from the trip. "Lewis says this was someone he trusted, and he had no reason to believe there was anything wrong with the suitcase," Law said. Potter has reportedly denied any knowledge of the substance found within the luggage.

The family described the situation as a "nightmare," highlighting the challenges posed by the language barrier and the seven-hour time difference. They are particularly concerned about Potter's mental health and well-being during his solitary detention.

Potter, a dance teacher and owner of LP Creative, graduated from Liverpool Theatre School and works with children and young people. His family emphasized his kind and caring nature, noting his absence has created a significant void in their lives.

A crowdfunding campaign has been initiated by the family to cover legal fees, which they estimate could reach £12,000. The campaign has raised £1,340 so far. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has been contacted for comment.
