Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council leader Alec Brown has stated that residents deserve to "feel safe in their own homes" following two separate fatal incidents that resulted in the deaths of nine people in the past week.

Seven individuals, including two police officers, died in a car crash on Saturday in South Bank, near Middlesbrough. On Wednesday, a 34-year-old woman and a seven-year-old girl died in a house fire in Grangetown.

Brown announced an "urgent meeting" scheduled for Friday involving local councillors, law enforcement, and social housing providers to address the recent events. Police have reported making several arrests in connection with the deaths.

Acknowledging a sense of being "left behind" among some residents in parts of Middlesbrough and Redcar, Brown, who identifies with the community, assured that all residents are equally important. "I can assure the people of Grangetown and South Bank – they're as important to me as a people from any other state in the borough and we're working tirelessly to ensure that they do feel safe in their own houses," he said.
