The British consulate in East Jerusalem, established in 1838, will not be closing as previously announced by the Israeli government, the United Kingdom has stated. Israel had planned to shut the consulate as a retaliatory measure following the UK's imposition of sanctions on Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, which are considered illegal under international law.
Despite the Israeli government's declaration to close the building within 30 days of the UK sanctions announcement in September, the UK has insisted that the site will remain operational. Most diplomats were expected to depart, but the UK Foreign Office has clarified that the building will function as a "UK Mission."
The UK government reportedly made last-ditch efforts to prevent the closure ahead of a Thursday deadline. British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband views the continuation of operations at the site as a positive outcome.
The British consulate in East Jerusalem is distinct from the UK embassy located in Tel Aviv, which serves as the primary diplomatic hub for the United Kingdom in Israel.
