UK Consulate in Jerusalem Faces Closure Amidst Diplomatic Tensions with Israel

Workers were observed removing signage from the British consulate in East Jerusalem overnight, as the facility prepares to close its doors amid escalating diplomatic tensions between the United Kingdom and Israel. The closure comes after Israel ordered the British government to shut down the consulate within 30 days and remove its diplomats from the city.

The order followed an announcement by British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, who imposed sanctions targeting Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, including a trade ban on goods produced in these areas. In response, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has stated that Israel is holding firm on its decision.

Workers were seen removing a plaque that read 'British Consulate General' and another sign for its consular section. The British flag remained flying over the building. No immediate comment was available from the consulate.

UK officials have reportedly been attempting to negotiate a resolution to keep the consulate open. Jonathan Powell, the UK's national security adviser, visited Israel last week in an effort to prevent the closure, but no agreement was reached.

The closure will result in the removal of the consulate's diplomatic status, legally barring approximately 30 diplomats and their families from operating from the building. Sources indicate that Israel is likely to redirect these diplomats to work from the British embassy in Tel Aviv.

In a retaliatory stance, Britain has threatened to expel Israeli diplomats from its embassy in London if its overseas staff are forced to leave. Such a move would be an unusual step for the two allied nations.

The British consulate in East Jerusalem, located in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, has a history spanning nearly 200 years, predating the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. It has historically been responsible for managing the UK's relations with Palestinians in Jerusalem, as well as in the West Bank and Gaza, and providing consular services to Palestinians.

The United Nations and the majority of the international community consider Israeli settlements in the occupied territories to be illegal under international law, a view that Israel disputes.

The closure order does not impact the British embassy in Tel Aviv, which continues to handle diplomatic relations with the Israeli government. The ongoing dispute marks a significant deterioration in the relationship between the UK and Israel, which have traditionally been close economic, security, and intelligence partners. The British government has previously expressed criticism of Israel's actions in the Gaza war and over settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank.
