UK Clocks Fall Back This Weekend, Marking End of British Summer Time

The United Kingdom will observe the end of British Summer Time this weekend as clocks fall back one hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday, October 24. This change marks the return to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and grants residents an additional hour in bed.

The clocks will spring forward again on Sunday, March 28, 2027, signaling the return of British Summer Time and the start of longer days.

This autumnal time change, a ritual familiar to many, has roots in a proposal from Edwardian campaigner William Willett. In 1907, Willett published "The Waste of Daylight," arguing that adjusting clocks forward during summer months would allow people to better utilize daylight in the evenings after work. His proposal faced significant opposition and was rejected multiple times in Parliament.

The outbreak of World War I, however, altered the landscape for daylight saving. Germany implemented the practice in April 1916 to conserve fuel and boost wartime productivity. Britain followed suit shortly thereafter, enacting the Summer Time Act in May 1916. The clocks were first advanced by one hour on May 21, 1916, and then set back on October 1 of the same year. Willett died in 1915, a year before the legislation he championed was enacted.

While the time change is a long-standing practice, it has also drawn criticism. Opponents argue that the twice-yearly shift disrupts sleep patterns, interferes with the body's natural circadian rhythms, and creates general inconvenience. The British Sleep Society has expressed support for ending these seasonal clock changes, citing concerns related to sleep quality and biological timing.

For most individuals, modern electronic devices connected to the internet via WiFi or 5G will automatically update to the correct time. Those with analog clocks will need to manually adjust them backward by one hour.
