The Charity Commission has launched an investigation into the Al Khair Foundation (AKF), one of Britain's largest Muslim charities, following allegations that a director channeled millions of pounds in aid to Hamas. The investigation comes as Mohammed Hasna, described as the charity's global director, faces extradition to the United States on charges related to supporting a designated terrorist organization.

US legal documents allege that Hasna, 45, used his position at AKF to send funds and supplies to Hamas after the October 7 attacks in 2023. An FBI investigation reportedly uncovered intercepted messages between Hasna and a senior Hamas leader, along with documentation detailing payments totaling nearly £4 million to the group. Hasna was arrested in the UK on July 31.

US prosecutors have charged Hasna with conspiring to provide material support to Hamas, conspiring to finance terrorism, and financing terrorism. Each charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. FBI New York Assistant Director James C. Barnacle Jr. stated that Hasna allegedly used a charity to funnel millions of dollars in aid to Hamas, a group responsible for numerous attacks.

According to the allegations, Hasna arranged cash deliveries to Ghazi Hamad, a top Hamas leader. Intercepted communications allegedly include a ledger detailing nearly £4 million in incoming funds and £2.3 million in expenses for the year ending July 2025, with over £500,000 of the incoming money reportedly received by Hamad. The FBI claims messages also discussed the transport, storage, and distribution of supplies to Hamas, with efforts made to conceal the true recipients.

Al Khair Foundation, based in Croydon, south London, operates four schools in the UK and provides humanitarian aid internationally. The charity's gross income reportedly surged from approximately $41.8 million in 2023 to $81.56 million in 2024, and $100 million for the year ending July 31, 2025, figures that mirror the organization's financial accounts. In response to the investigation, Al Khair stated it is cooperating with the Charity Commission and that Hasna is employed by one of their implementing partners.

However, evidence uncovered suggests Hasna represented Al Khair at the signing of an agreement with another foundation just three months prior. The Charity Commission has issued a legal order restricting AKF's financial transactions as it probes the nature of the charity's connections to Hasna.

British politicians have called for Hasna's extradition and for a thorough investigation into the charity. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp stated that there should be no place in British public life for any group fundraising for a designated terrorist organization and urged the Charity Commission and police to investigate how funds reached Hamas and to shut down the organization.
