UK Chancellor Weighs Fuel Duty Relief Amidst Rising Prices
Chancellor John Healey acknowledges the impact of global factors on fuel costs and signals potential relief in an upcoming budget.
Chancellor John Healey stated he is "very conscious" of the financial strain on individuals and businesses caused by escalating fuel prices, attributing the increases to international factors. Healey announced that fuel duty would remain frozen until the end of the year and highlighted the availability of 'fuel finder' applications designed to help consumers locate more affordable petrol stations.
"I'm very aware as I prepare the budget - I'll deliver it a month today - that this needs to be a breathing space budget, recognizing the cost of living and the cost of business pressures," Healey remarked during the Labour Party Conference. He also indicated support for further fuel duty cuts, suggesting they would offer significant benefits to the industry.
These comments come as both petrol and diesel prices have seen substantial increases, rising by a third or more in the past seven months. The rising costs have impacted businesses such as Berry's Coaches, a company operating five daily services from the South West to London. According to Berry, the firm's costs have increased by £750,000 this year due to climbing fuel prices.
While Berry expressed confidence that the company could navigate the economic challenges, drawing on its 100-year history, Berry's Coaches has implemented fuel surcharges on several of its services, adding a £2 surcharge to each leg of the journey to London. Berry noted that the government's delay in fuel duty increases offered a relatively small benefit and advocated for more substantial duty cuts as a measure that would greatly assist the industry.
Healey's acknowledgement of the pressures faced by consumers and businesses suggests that the upcoming budget may include measures aimed at alleviating the burden of high fuel costs. The government's actions so far, including the fuel duty freeze and the promotion of fuel finder apps, are intended to provide some immediate relief while broader economic strategies are considered.
