UK Chancellor to Shield Low-Income Pensioners from Income Tax in Budget

UK Chancellor Jeremy Hunt is planning to shield low-income pensioners from income tax in the upcoming Budget, according to Treasury sources. The move aims to prevent pensioners from facing an administrative burden to pay a small amount of tax, particularly as the full, flat-rate state pension is set to rise in April.

The Budget is scheduled to be presented on Wednesday, with final details being refined until the last moment. Treasury sources indicate that the announcement will not feature the extensive tax and spending measures seen in previous budgets from both Labour and Conservative governments.

Calls for tax adjustments have come from various political parties. The Conservative Party has urged the chancellor to reduce green taxes, red tape, and benefits to lower energy bills. Reform, a think tank, has recommended the adoption of 60 policies designed to create jobs, including support for the controversial Rosebank oil field, a project Hunt is reportedly backing.

The Liberal Democrats, through Treasury spokeswoman Daisy Cooper, have advocated for a new growth and defense partnership with the European Union, including rejoining the single market, to alleviate the "huge tax burden weighing people down." The Green Party has also called on Hunt to make the UK more affordable by funding energy bill support through measures such as ending tax relief for data centers, as outlined in a letter from senior Green Party politicians to the chancellor.
