UK Chancellor Faces Ultimatum on Defence Spending

Conservative MP Andrew Griffith has issued a stark ultimatum to Chancellor John Healey, stating that the Chancellor must either significantly increase defense spending or resign from his position. Griffith's call comes as he argues that the United Kingdom is facing an era of extraordinary threats, citing Russia's escalating rhetoric and actions.

Griffith contends that the government's current approach to defense funding is inadequate, drawing a comparison to the necessary funding for welfare payouts, which are set to rise by £50 billion per year under the current government. He suggests that the additional £10 billion annually required for defense is a fraction of this amount and could be secured through savings rather than increased borrowing.

In June, Healey himself resigned as Defence Secretary, reportedly due to concerns that the existing plan "could make the country less safe." At the time, he advocated for a commitment to spend 3% of GDP on defense by 2030, a benchmark he argues is necessary for the UK to maintain a competitive position within NATO.

Griffith criticized the government's reliance on its Defense Investment Plan, stating that while it is an important step, it falls short of the 3% GDP target and does not provide the sustainable funding the military requires for planning and procurement. He highlighted recent decisions, such as the removal of £2 billion from the Army's armored vehicle program, as examples of short-sighted cuts that could leave vehicles and soldiers vulnerable.

Griffith proposed alternative funding sources, including savings from welfare spending, the scrapping of the Chagos deal, and redirecting research and development funding. He also suggested transforming the National Wealth Fund into a National Defence and Resilience Bank. Griffith asserted that these proposals are fully costed and transparently presented, contrasting them with the approach of past governments.

The call for increased defense spending follows a period of heightened geopolitical tension, including warnings from Russia's embassy in London and reports of Russian military activity in the English Channel. NATO's senior commander in Europe has also outlined contingency plans for a potential Russian invasion at the alliance's border.

Griffith concluded by emphasizing that adequate defense funding is a critical responsibility of government and that the Chancellor has an opportunity to signal the UK's seriousness about national security through his upcoming Budget speech. He stated that if Healey fails to act, Conservative opposition would provide the necessary support to implement these changes.
