Tina Farnsworth, 57, has been handed a suspended sentence after defrauding the UK's Personal Independence Payment (PIP) of £37,089 by falsely claiming she was too ill to perform basic daily tasks. Farnsworth had claimed she was unable to prepare food, wash or bathe, dress and undress, mix with others, drive, walk more than 50 meters without aid, use public transport, or manage her finances without support. These claims allowed her to receive PIP at an enhanced rate for three years, between August 2019 and March 2024.
Investigation and Evidence
An anonymous tip-off prompted an investigation by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), casting doubt on Farnsworth's stated disabilities. Investigators gathered evidence through social media and surveillance, which reportedly corroborated the tip. Footage from 2024 showed Farnsworth working in pubs, including Pour House 22 and Black Velvet Bar in Barnsley, where she was seen preparing food, lifting heavy items, and serving drinks. Video evidence also captured her lifting wine glasses from an overhead rack and bringing pints of beer to customers. Additionally, she was observed lifting items into a car boot without assistance and had flown to Dublin and Florida without special aid.
Court Proceedings and Sentence
When questioned by investigators, Farnsworth stated that her PIP application was based on her worst days and that the evidence collected did not accurately represent her day-to-day health condition. Despite her defense, Farnsworth was found guilty of benefit fraud at Sheffield Crown Court. She received a suspended sentence and will also face a Loss of Benefit Penalty for a minimum of 13 weeks, provided she is eligible for other benefits. The DWP has indicated its intention to recover the defrauded funds through the Proceeds of Crime Act and other debt recovery methods.
Andrew Western, Minister for Transformation, issued a statement emphasizing that individuals who steal from taxpayers will be caught. He stated that investigators are aware of various methods used to commit benefit fraud and urged the public to report suspected cases of system abuse.
