Many individuals remain with their initial bank accounts, often opened during their student or early working years, despite the availability of more advantageous offers, including cash incentives. Statistics from the Current Account Switch Service (CASS) indicate a growing popularity of bank account switching in the UK, with over one million switches recorded for the third consecutive year. However, with nearly 54 million adults in the UK, the majority are still not changing their accounts.
Shifting Customer Behavior
Savvy consumers are increasingly considering switching accounts to secure better deals and services. Banks are responding by offering a variety of current accounts tailored to different needs, such as those that pay interest, offer fee-free spending abroad, provide robust mobile apps and budgeting tools, or feature competitive overdraft rates and additional benefits like insurance.
Financial Incentives and Perks
Several banks are offering significant incentives to encourage customers to switch. HSBC, for example, is providing a substantial £220 bonus for new customers who open an account via its mobile app, complete a full switch within 60 days, deposit at least £2,000, and spend £500. However, eligibility is restricted for existing HSBC or First Direct customers since January 1, 2023. While this offer is financially attractive, it lacks other perks found in different accounts.
NatWest is also offering a £200 switch bonus, coupled with a competitive 5.25% interest rate on its Digital Regular Saver for balances up to £5,000, though monthly deposits are capped at £150. To receive the bonus, customers must switch, pay in at least £1,250 within 60 days, and log into the mobile banking app. Eligibility excludes those who held a NatWest current account after May 6, 2026, or previously received a cash incentive from the NatWest group.
The Co-Operative Bank has a multi-tiered offer. New customers can receive up to £125 by meeting several conditions within 30 days of switching, including depositing at least £1,500, setting up two direct debits, using their debit card five times, and signing up for online or mobile banking. An additional £25 monthly bonus is available for three months for meeting similar activity requirements. Existing customers can receive an extra £100 if they previously qualified for the £125 payment and were customers before June 21.
Interest and Cashback Offers
While in-credit interest rates on current accounts have generally decreased, some providers still offer competitive returns. Nationwide's FlexDirect account provides a 5% introductory interest rate on balances up to £1,500 for the first 12 months, along with a £175 switch bonus. To qualify for the introductory interest, new customers must deposit at least £1,000 monthly, with the rate dropping to 1% after the first year.
Kroo, a newer digital bank, offers a 2.65% variable interest rate on balances up to £500,000 with no specific requirements to access the interest and fee-free spending abroad. Santander's Edge Up account offers 2.1% variable interest on balances up to £25,000, but comes with a £5 monthly fee and requires a £1,500 monthly deposit and two active direct debits.
Cashback offers are also available, though some have been modified. Chase provides 2% cashback up to £20 per month on select categories like groceries and restaurants for the first year. However, this requires making at least 15 payments monthly and maintaining £1,000 in Chase savings accounts. Santander's Edge Up account offers 1% cashback on select household bills paid by direct debit, capped at £15 per month, also incurring a £5 monthly fee and requiring a £1,500 monthly deposit.
Digital Banking Options
Online-only banks are also competing for customers. Starling Bank, recognized for customer service, offers a linked easy-access savings account with a 4% interest rate for the first 12 months, reducing to 2.5% thereafter. It also provides fee-free international spending and 24/7 UK-based customer support.
