UK Baby Bank Sees Rise in Working Families Needing Support
A Birmingham-based baby bank reports an increasing number of families with full-time employment are seeking assistance for essential child care items due to rising living costs.
The Handsworth Baby and Family Bank in Birmingham, run by Kavita Kaur Dhillon and her husband Karvinder, is experiencing a surge in demand from working parents struggling to afford necessities for their children. The bank provides free items such as nappies, baby formula, clothes, and toys.
Initially, the majority of clients were from low-income households. However, Dhillon and Karvinder noted a shift, with more families who are employed full-time now requiring support with everyday expenses. "We don't need any more clothing, it's the everyday essentials, formula, nappies, wipes, toiletries," Kavita stated.
Karvinder explained that the nature of the demand has changed in recent years. "Before, we mainly needed nappies," he said. "As the daily cost of living has gone up, people need help with more day-to-day things."
The couple highlighted a critical shortage of baby formula, often having only a few tubs in stock. Kavita emphasized that financial struggles are not always visible, stating, "Just because you dress nice, or drive a nice car, doesn't mean you don't need help. Nobody knows people's circumstances. People can judge, but the reality is people are struggling."
The bank, located on Soho Road, relies on donations to operate. The increasing cost of living, including inflation and rising utility bills, is impacting families across the board, forcing many to make difficult choices between essential expenses.
