UK Authorities Seize 25 Boats Destined for People Smugglers

British authorities have seized 25 inflatable boats intended for people smugglers, a consignment capable of carrying up to 1,700 illegal immigrants across the English Channel. The nine-meter-long vessels were intercepted at East Midlands Airport on October 2 after intelligence officers identified them concealed within pallets aboard an air freight shipment originating from Turkey and destined for the Netherlands.

The operation marks the first time a major shipment of small-boat equipment for Channel crossings has been detected in air freight, according to officials. This seizure follows a similar haul in July, when 25 boats and 25 engines were intercepted from a maritime consignment at the port of Felixstowe.

"This work is happening both overseas, with international partners, and here in the UK. So far it has led to the seizure of in excess of 1,600 boats and engines, denying their use to criminal networks," said Craig Turner, NCA Deputy Director of Investigations. "Our assessment is that this is having an impact, driving up the cost of boats and engines, making it more difficult to get them to the coast and eating into the profits of the criminal gangs involved."

The National Crime Agency (NCA) stated that these seizures are part of ongoing efforts to disrupt the supply chains that fuel criminal gangs organizing small-boat crossings. The agency currently has approximately 100 investigations into organized immigration crime underway, aiming to dismantle smuggling networks.

An assessment by the NCA published last month indicated that restrictions on the supply of boats and engines have become a critical factor affecting organized crime groups involved in Channel crossings. The agency also concluded that law enforcement actions contributed to a reduction in illegal small-boat transports to Britain during the first half of 2026. NCA-linked arrests for organized immigration crime saw an increase of over 55% in the year leading up to April 2026.

Minister for Border Security and Asylum, Anna Turley, emphasized the success of these disruptions. "Disruptions to supply lines like these are happening more than ever before as we bear down on the illegal and dangerous crossings," Turley said. "We are making progress, with this summer seeing the lowest number of small boat arrivals since 2020 and arrests for immigration crime up 74 percent on the previous year."

Despite these efforts, thousands of migrants continue to attempt the perilous journey across the Channel. Official figures indicate that 19,869 migrants have made the crossing so far this year in nearly 300 boats. The NCA highlighted that the latest seizure underscores the importance of intercepting the equipment supply chain before the boats reach the coast and are utilized by people smugglers.
