UK Airports Roll Out Passport-Free E-Gates Using Facial Recognition
The contactless system, first implemented at East Midlands Airport, aims to speed up passenger processing and is slated for a nationwide rollout by early 2027.
Passengers arriving in the United Kingdom will soon be able to pass through airport e-gates without presenting their passports, thanks to a new contactless system introduced by the government. East Midlands Airport was the first to implement this technology on Tuesday, with a nationwide rollout expected at all UK airports by early 2027, according to the Home Office.
The system utilizes facial recognition technology. As travelers approach an e-gate, their photo is captured and cross-referenced with immigration, travel, and passport data. If the information matches, the barrier opens automatically.
Officials reported that initial testing indicated the contactless system could be up to 25% faster than the traditional passport check process. In cases where further checks are required, travelers may need to place their passport on the reader or be directed to a Border Force officer. Border Force officers will continue to monitor all e-gates and provide assistance, and passengers are advised to keep their passports with them at all times.
"This is a win for travellers coming to our brilliant country," said Phil Douglas, director general of Border Force. "By using state-of-the-art technology, we are making journeys smoother and faster, all while fully maintaining the UK's robust border security." He also noted that the digital transformation includes extending e-gate access to children aged eight and above.
Karen Dee, chief executive of Airports UK, described the initiative as "excellent news for the passenger." She emphasized the importance of efficient borders for arriving travelers and pledged cooperation with government officials for a smooth rollout. Steve Griffiths, managing director of East Midlands Airport, expressed delight in hosting the first contactless e-gates, stating that the airport welcomes innovations that enhance customer journeys. This development complements recent upgrades to the airport's immigration hall aimed at improving passenger flow.
Standard e-gates are currently operational at Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Glasgow, Heathrow, London City, Luton, Manchester, Newcastle, and Stansted airports.
