The UK government is facing criticism over its handling of the migrant crisis in the English Channel, with accusations that French authorities are not adequately preventing crossings. The Conservatives have alleged that French officials are "pathetically standing around on the beaches while hundreds of migrants embark on massive dinghies."
This criticism comes after a record 230 migrants reportedly arrived on a single dinghy, an event that Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp described as a "complete laughing stock" in relation to Labour's efforts.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has been scrutinized for a security deal signed in April, which commits the UK to paying France £660 million over three years. Ms. Mahmood stated the agreement was a "landmark" initiative designed to "really arm us to go after the people-smugglers."
However, Mr. Philp recounted a visit to a French beach last month where he observed gendarmes present as small boats departed, and he claimed they refused to apprehend an individual identified as a suspected people-trafficker. This observation has fueled the ongoing debate about the effectiveness of the bilateral security arrangement.
