UCSB Dean Launches Review Amid Alpha Phi Sorority Racism Scandal

UC Santa Barbara Dean of Students Joaquin Becerra has initiated a formal review into a recruitment "bias incident" involving the Alpha Phi sorority, citing potential violations of system-wide anti-discrimination policies. The move comes as a scandal over alleged racist practices during sorority rush has sent shockwaves through the campus, leading to student walkouts and prompting the university to offer 24/7 psychological counseling.

In a leaked internal email, Becerra urged students to halt an escalating campus "witch hunt" against the sorority member accused of purging potential recruits of color. He acknowledged the "deep impact" of the controversy and pleaded for a mindful approach, warning against shaming or excluding community members as the university pursues education and accountability. Emergency meetings have been scheduled with Collegiate Panhellenic Council presidents to manage the fallout.

The controversy erupted when active Alpha Phi sisters reportedly confronted national representatives over the alleged unexplained removal of minority candidates from the recruitment list. The pool of potential new members reportedly dropped from 1,200 to approximately 250 in a single recruitment round. Sisters of color were allegedly sidelined from recruiting duties.

According to reports, when national representatives attempted to de-escalate the situation by suggesting a "dance party," Alpha Phi President Alana Nielsen reportedly refused and called for a chapter-wide meeting. This meeting led to a confrontation where sisters voiced their concerns directly to recruiters.

Becerra stated that the alleged behavior runs counter to the campus's values and Principles of Community. He confirmed the matter is being reviewed as a potential violation of the UC Anti-Discrimination Policy, with corrective actions to be managed by the appropriate campus departments. Counseling and Psychological Services have been put on alert to provide round-the-clock support.

One affected student, Sky Achola, a third-year political science major, reported arriving at the sorority house on September 27th expecting to participate in recruitment activities, only to find her name removed from the schedule.

As of the latest reports, Alpha Phi International has not publicly commented on the allegations, a silence that has reportedly fueled anger and disappointment within the UCSB Panhellenic community. Nielsen previously stated, "Moving forward doesn’t mean moving on without accountability."
