UCLA Stuns Oregon Behind Backup Quarterback and Dominant Defense

The No. 21 UCLA Bruins achieved a significant upset victory over the No. 13 Oregon Ducks on Saturday, with a resilient performance from backup quarterback Ty Dieffenbach and a standout defensive effort securing a 17-15 win at Autzen Stadium.

The victory marks the first five-game winning streak for coach Bob Chesney at UCLA, setting the Bruins on a path that could lead to the College Football Playoff. UCLA’s defense proved pivotal, forcing six turnovers and limiting Oregon to 272 total yards. The Bruins’ defense ultimately sealed the win, stopping Oregon on a two-point conversion attempt with two minutes remaining and recovering a fumble on the final play of the game.

UCLA’s offense found an unlikely hero in Dieffenbach, who stepped in for starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava after he sustained a leg injury late in the second quarter. After a brief return where he threw an interception in the end zone, Iamaleava was sidelined for the second half. Dieffenbach completed 3 of 6 passes for 43 yards and the go-ahead touchdown pass to running back Wayne Knight early in the fourth quarter, extending UCLA’s lead to 17-6.

Oregon struggled offensively throughout the contest, with fans expressing their frustration through boos during a mistake-plagued first half. The Ducks managed only 58 yards of offense by halftime. Their lone touchdown in the first half came after Iamaleava fumbled the ball at UCLA’s own 1-yard line, setting up an easy scoring run for Oregon.

Oregon quarterback Dylan Raiola completed only six passes and threw two interceptions before being replaced. The team then turned to third-stringer Brock Thomas. Despite the offensive struggles, Oregon mounted a late comeback attempt, scoring a touchdown in the fourth quarter and driving for a potential tying two-point conversion. However, UCLA’s defense, led by Jalen Woods and Tyson Ford, stuffed Jordon Davison short of the goal line.

UCLA’s defense continued to pressure Oregon, forcing a final fumble on a lateral play as time expired, confirming the Bruins' momentous victory.

The Bruins will return home to face Wisconsin on Oct. 17 at the Rose Bowl, beginning a three-game homestand that also includes games against Michigan State and Nevada.
