UCLA Students Launch Costco Club to Combat High Cost of Living

At UCLA, a new student club is leveraging a shared affinity for bulk discounts and $1.50 hot dogs to combat the rising cost of living in Southern California. The UCLA Costco Club, founded in September, aims to bring together students for group shopping expeditions to the warehouse retailer, offering a practical solution for budget-conscious Bruins.

The club emerged in response to the financial pressures faced by students, particularly those living off-campus who must manage rent, expensive groceries, and transportation costs in Los Angeles. By pooling resources, students with Costco memberships and vehicles can assist those without, facilitating access to bulk purchases that might otherwise be out of reach or impractical for individuals.

According to the Daily Bruin, the club's inaugural meeting saw over 50 students in attendance, indicating a strong demand for such a practical and community-focused initiative. Beyond the core mission of cost-saving through bulk buying, the club also plans to organize meal-prepping classes, Costco trivia nights, and campus food drives.

The formation of the Costco Club also addresses broader societal trends, including rising Gen Z loneliness. A July Harris Poll revealed that 51% of Gen Z adults report feeling lonely on weekends, with many experiencing their social lives more through their phones than in person. A significant portion of young adults also expressed a desire for more affordable ways to socialize, with 68% finding traditional outings not worth the financial cost.

Costco has increasingly become an unlikely hub for budget-friendly activities, extending beyond student clubs to casual date nights for cash-strapped individuals. The UCLA Costco Club seeks to foster an inclusive and light-hearted environment where students can connect, save money, and build community after their classes.
