UCLA Coach Bob Chesney's Motivational Tactics Fueling Team's Unbeaten Start
The Bruins' head coach employs a dynamic range of motivational strategies, drawing inspiration from his father and historical figures to ignite his team's confidence and performance.

Bob Chesney, the head coach of UCLA football, has masterfully motivated his team to an undefeated start in the Big Ten conference, employing a varied approach that inspires confidence and demands conviction. His methods range from rousing pronouncements to calculated reassurances, all delivered with passion and conviction. "It's your house, your house, your house!" Chesney has been heard exclaiming, tapping players on their helmets as a pre-game ritual.
This season, the Bruins have achieved their best start since 2022, a success attributed in part to Chesney's dynamic coaching style. Behind-the-scenes videos released by the school's athletic department showcase his multifaceted motivational techniques. Whether facing a roaring crowd or a close game, Chesney adapts his message, emphasizing the importance of unwavering belief. "You must believe 100% they're going to win each game, not 99%," he repeatedly tells his players.
One of Chesney's most talked-about speeches occurred in a tunnel before the Bruins faced Oregon. Citing the historical tactic of Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes, Chesney urged his team to "Burn the f—ing boats!" He emphasized that their only option was to push forward, as retreat was impossible. This fiery address preceded UCLA's 17-15 victory over Oregon, contributing to their current 6-0 record.
Chesney credits his father, Bob Chesney Sr., who also coached him in high school, as a significant influence on his motivational approach. His father's ability to instill confidence and a belief in playing better than expected, even when outmatched, laid the foundation for Chesney's own coaching philosophy. "He was always looking for an edge, like a mental edge and a building-of-confidence edge," Chesney said of his father.
Beyond familial influence, Chesney has researched various leadership styles, integrating elements that best suit different game situations. He prepares his team for shifts in dynamics, such as moving from being the hunter to the hunted, or facing expectations as favorites. Currently, with UCLA as two-touchdown favorites against Michigan State, the focus is on maintaining high standards.
Players note that Chesney's words resonate because of his active involvement and enthusiasm during practices. "All the things that he talks about and tells us about, he does on a daily basis," said wide receiver Semaj Morgan. "Like, he’ll go out there in every single drill we do, every period in practice, he’s so involved, he’s so enthusiastic." Morgan added that if possible, Chesney would likely join them on the field to play.
Chesney structures his motivation strategically, building intensity throughout the week to culminate in pre-game addresses. "Ultimately, I try to put a lot of thought into it and we try to make sure we consistently carry messages throughout the week that they can stay focused on and know in times that when it gets tight that who they are and what they’re all about," he explained.
Following the victory against Oregon, Chesney shared his post-game thoughts with his team, celebrating their defensive performance and lack of turnovers. As his players celebrated, lifting him onto their shoulders, Chesney's smile reflected the success of his motivational efforts, culminating in the team singing their fight song together.
