The dormant rivalry between UCLA and California is set to reignite Saturday night at Memorial Stadium, marking the first gridiron clash between the former Pac-12 opponents since 2023. The matchup signals a new chapter for both programs, each entering the season with new head coaches and significant roster shifts.
UCLA’s new coach, Bob Chesney, acknowledged the unique circumstances surrounding the reunion, including the financial implications of UCLA’s move to the Big Ten Conference, which led to annual payments to Cal. "I don’t know if I would have agreed to that," Chesney said of the "Calimony" payments, "but that’s how it went down, so it is what it is."
The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff, reviving the "Pac-12 After Dark" tradition, a time slot known for its unpredictable outcomes.
UCLA's Transferred Talent
UCLA's roster features five players who previously played for Cal: running back Jaivian Thomas, wide receiver Mikey Matthews, edge rusher Ryan McCulloch, defensive tackle Tyson Ford, and kicker Mateen Bhaghani. Thomas, an Oakland native, expressed excitement about returning to his college football roots. "Where I started off my college career at, man," Thomas said. "It’s just, you know, just friendly trash talk and stuff like that, but, man, I’m excited."
Conversely, Cal's roster includes no former UCLA players, a dynamic that suggests a stronger draw to Westwood than to Berkeley for players experiencing both programs.
Cal's Quarterback and Coaching Uncertainty
For Cal, quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele is considered a key asset. Described as difficult to fluster, he completed 64.2% of his passes for 3,454 yards and 18 touchdowns with nine interceptions as a freshman. Head coach Tosh Lupoi, in his first head coaching role, leads a staff with coordinators from the Minnesota Vikings and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, presenting an element of the unknown for opponents.
UCLA’s coaching staff faces the challenge of preparing for a Cal team with new coordinators whose schemes are not well-documented. UCLA cornerback Rodrick Pleasant described the preparation as "a puzzle," attempting to piece together information about offensive coordinator Jordan Somerville's past work.
Roster Changes and Eligibility
UCLA linebacker Trent Hendrick is set to play after receiving a court clearing for an additional season of eligibility, allowing him to join training camp late. "He’s ready to go, jumped right back in," Chesney stated. "He will certainly help with our depth and special teams and everything else."
UCLA quarterback Nico Iamaleava is also navigating a new era, playing under his third head coach in as many seasons. The team's offensive coordinator, Dean Kennedy, noted that Iamaleava "has completely bought in" and is expected to reduce the number of hits he takes, contingent on the offensive line and run game improvements.
