Uber Wins Bid to Dismiss £340 Million Black Cab Driver Lawsuit

Uber has successfully had claims totaling approximately £340 million thrown out by the High Court. The lawsuits were brought by thousands of London black cab drivers and two former private hire firms.

The claimants alleged that Uber provided misleading information to Transport for London (TfL) when it obtained its initial operating license in the capital in 2012. However, the High Court judge dismissed the cases based on the timing of their filing, without adjudicating on the truthfulness of the allegations.

Uber, which had denied the claims, expressed satisfaction that the court dismissed the case at the earliest possible stage. The lawsuits, filed in 2024, were contested by Uber, which argued they fell outside the six-year statute of limitations for such claims.

Mr. Justice Birt, in a written ruling, stated that the claimants could have uncovered the alleged deception prior to 2018. Approximately 13,000 drivers were seeking nearly £200 million in damages. An additional claim on behalf of two now-defunct private hire firms, Kabbie and Iride, sought around £140 million.

RGL Management, the firm that managed the cases for the claimants, announced deep disappointment and is evaluating its legal options with the legal team.

Since securing its license, Uber has captured a significant portion of the market previously dominated by black cabs. The company is also facing a separate tax dispute with HM Revenue and Customs next week, valued at over £1 billion.
