Uber has launched the United Kingdom's first robotaxi service in London, marking a significant step in the public availability of autonomous vehicles. The service began on Thursday, with customers able to hail the self-driving cars through the Uber app.

Initially, the fleet consists of 15 autonomous vehicles licensed to operate within the city. A crucial safety feature of the current rollout is that each vehicle must have a human safety driver present, ready to take manual control if necessary. This hybrid approach aims to balance technological advancement with public safety assurances.

For passengers, the fares for these robotaxi rides will be consistent with standard UberX, Uber Electric, or Uber Comfort journeys. The app will display upfront fares, providing transparency for users before they book a trip.

The BBC's Zoe Kleinman was among the first to experience the service, becoming the first British journalist to take a ride in a self-driving Uber in London. Her experience highlights the public's first real-world exposure to this new form of urban transportation.
