The United Arab Emirates has suspended all trade with Iran, a significant move by a key US ally that could have a "crippling effect" on the Iranian economy. The decision, which went into effect over the weekend, halts approximately $6 billion in annual exports from the UAE to Iran and cuts off access to essential goods.

Dubai, the UAE's primary commercial hub, has been Iran's largest supplier of goods, serving as its vital link to the outside world amidst extensive Western sanctions. The UAE's decision follows repeated Iranian missile attacks that have prompted evacuations.

This suspension threatens the $21.3 billion trade relationship between the two nations. According to retired US General Mark Kimmitt, the move could also severely restrict Iran's ability to acquire US dollars, a crucial currency for international transactions.

Iran relies on the UAE for approximately $14.8 billion in imports, accounting for 30% of its total imports. These include consumer goods, food, and industrial equipment. Dubai's ports are critical for Iran's acquisition of items such as phones, computers, tobacco, and nuts.

Furthermore, Iran exported around $6.5 billion worth of goods to the UAE, nearly 15% of its non-oil exports. Notably, the UAE was the largest market for 70% of Iran's fuel oil exports. The flow of refined oil, including gasoline and diesel, also travels in the reverse direction from the UAE to Iran, helping to mitigate domestic supply shortages.

The suspension of trade by the UAE is considered by some analysts to be potentially more impactful than US sanctions. "In many ways, the embargo being put on by the UAE is even more significant than the embargo being put on by the United States," Kimmitt told Al Jazeera.

This development coincides with the US Treasury Department's launch of "Operation Economic Outcast," an initiative urging all nations to sever business ties with Iran. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the President is actively engaging with world leaders to encourage them to follow the UAE's example.
