U2 Star Becomes Unwitting Target of Young Musician's Bold Move

A young musician found herself sharing a stage with the legendary Irish rock band U2, a dream performance facilitated by her involvement with Music Generation. This national music education program has been significantly supported by U2 since its inception in 2010. The experience culminated in an invitation to perform alongside the band during a mini-concert at Mount Temple in Dublin, the band's former school. Participants from the Music Generation program were invited to provide orchestral backing for U2's 1991 hit song "One."

One of the young performers, Shannon Murphy from Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford, secured this remarkable opportunity through her participation in Music Generation. Similarly, Alex Power Rockett, a student at St. Paul’s Community College in Waterford, also joined the ensemble. Rockett had reportedly only recently shifted his focus to music, having previously been engaged in sports before dedicating more time to playing video games.

While U2 bassist Adam Clayton had to depart shortly after the performance, the other band members—Bono, The Edge, and Larry Mullen Jr.—stayed to interact with the young musicians they indirectly support through their patronage of Music Generation. The event highlighted the program's success in nurturing emerging talent and providing unique performance opportunities.
