The United States carried out strikes against Iran on Friday, targeting missile and drone storage locations and coastal radar sites. The action by U.S. Central Command followed an alleged Iranian attack on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz earlier the same day.
President Donald Trump stated on social media that Iran had launched four one-way drones toward ships in the Strait. He reported that three of the drones were intercepted by U.S. forces, while a fourth struck a cargo vessel. Trump described the incident as a "foolish violation of our Ceasefire Agreement." The cargo ship sustained damage but was able to continue its journey, he added.
Shortly before the U.S. Central Command's announcement, President Trump alluded to a potential U.S. response when questioned by reporters about repercussions for Iran's alleged breach of the ceasefire agreement. He responded, "You'll find out."
The Persian Gulf Seaways Management Organization, an entity recently established by Iran to oversee the Strait, issued a statement after the U.S. strikes. The organization indicated that "the consequences of traveling on unauthorized routes will be the responsibility of the owner, operator, and commander of the vessel."
