U.S. Envoys Held Three-Hour Meeting With Iranian Leaders on UN Sidelines
President Trump revealed the talks occurred as he simultaneously threatened Iran with 'obliteration' during a UN address.
President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that his special envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, engaged in a three-hour meeting with Iranian leadership on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
The meeting took place on the same day Trump delivered a speech to the assembly in which he warned Iran of severe consequences, stating the U.S. might "drive them into hell."
"It was a very good meeting. It went very well," Trump told reporters regarding the talks, which began around 10 a.m. "I can’t imagine why they wouldn’t want to do it. It’s potential greatness or obliteration. It’s two choices."
The president indicated the discussion occurred concurrently with his confrontational remarks to the world leaders' annual gathering. It remains unclear which Iranian officials participated in the meeting, though Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi were both present in New York for UN-related events.
