U.S. Dispatches Third Aircraft Carrier to Middle East Amid Iran Tensions

The Pentagon is deploying a third aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East, a move that coincides with President Trump's reported consideration of ramping up military action against Iran after the upcoming midterm elections.

The USS Theodore Roosevelt and its accompanying strike group departed from San Diego on Sunday, bringing an additional 9,000 to 10,000 service members to the region. This deployment is occurring as President Trump weighs potential next steps regarding Iran, according to The Wall Street Journal.

This latest deployment adds to the existing naval presence, with the USS George H.W. Bush and USS George Washington already stationed in the Middle East. The USS George Washington recently relieved the USS Abraham Lincoln, which had completed a record-setting deployment marked by reports of challenging conditions for its crew.

Following reports of crew fatigue and incidents where sailors reportedly attempted to jump overboard aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, attributed in part to supply shortages caused by Iranian disruptions to regional shipping, the Navy has taken steps to ensure the USS Theodore Roosevelt is equipped for an extended deployment. Navy leadership highlighted efforts to maximize the ship's stores of food, hygiene products, and other essential supplies before its departure, as noted last month.
