Federal agents arrested a 22-year-old Utah resident Thursday night in connection with the killing of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, authorities said, after the man allegedly confessed to his father and agreed to turn himself in.

The suspect, identified by U.S. officials as Tyler Robinson, was taken into custody in southern Utah by FBI agents after his father recognized him from images released by investigators and, with the help of a local youth pastor, persuaded him to surrender, a law enforcement official said. Robinson is accused in the attack that killed Kirk in Orem, Utah, earlier this week.

Authorities have described Robinson as having become deeply engaged in political discourse in recent years and said he had expressed hostility toward Kirk. Officials said that at a recent dinner Robinson told others that “Charlie Kirk was full of hate and spreading hate,” remarks that investigators are examining as they probe motive. Law enforcement officials have not released details about charges filed against Robinson as the investigation continues.

Robinson’s arrest followed the FBI’s public release of images and information seeking help in locating the suspect. Officials said the father recognized his son in the images and notified authorities; Robinson then consulted with a youth pastor and agreed to turn himself in to the FBI, according to a law enforcement official familiar with the matter.

Neighbors and relatives described a contrast between Robinson’s alleged actions and his upbringing. His mother, Amber Robinson, who has worked with disabled children, and his grandmother posted numerous family photos on social media showing the suspect as a boy and teenager in a close-knit household in Washington, Utah, roughly 260 miles south of Orem. Neighbors interviewed by local media said they found the arrest shocking and described the family as hardworking and loving.

Social media posts attributed to the family show outdoor family snapshots, images from school events and, in some posts, pictures in which Robinson and his brothers appear with firearms at ranges and military-themed events. One photo from 2017 showed a youth in a Donald Trump Halloween costume, and other images include Robinson posing with what appears to be an M2 Browning .50-caliber machine gun and a shoulder-fired weapon in the background of family pictures. Robinson’s mother has posted about her sons’ activities, including shooting-range outings and a brief stint at college.

Robinson attended Utah State University for one semester in 2021 before transferring back home to pursue an electrical apprenticeship at Dixie Technical College, a university spokesman confirmed. Family posts and neighborhood accounts indicate Robinson has two younger brothers and lived in a six-bedroom home in Washington, Utah.

In the hours after the arrest, users posted vehement comments on family social-media albums, with some criticizing Robinson’s parents and others making hostile remarks directed at the suspect. Family members’ posts that once celebrated ordinary family milestones drew fresh scrutiny as the investigation proceeded.

President Donald Trump commented on the case Thursday night, saying he hoped Robinson would be found guilty and “gets the death penalty.” Trump’s statement came as local and federal authorities continued to gather evidence and interview witnesses in the killing of Kirk, a prominent conservative commentator and founder of a national activist organization.

Investigators have not publicly described a detailed timeline of events leading up to the killing or the specific circumstances of the attack in Orem. Federal and local law enforcement officials said they are coordinating their inquiries; the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the FBI are involved in the investigation along with local police.

Family members and neighbors told reporters they were stunned by the allegations and said Robinson had been described as respectful and quiet by those who knew him. His mother’s social-media accounts, visible before authorities restricted access, contained multiple photographs of her children at family gatherings and outdoor excursions, reflecting a portrait of a conventional childhood and adolescence.

Authorities urged the public to let the investigative process proceed. Prosecutors must review evidence and decide on charges and potential federal involvement; the case could involve both state and federal statutes depending on the results of the probe. No timetable was provided for formal charging decisions or for the release of further investigative findings.

As the community and the political sphere reacted to the killing, law enforcement officials reiterated that allegations against Robinson remain subject to verification in court. The investigation into what led to the fatal attack is ongoing, and authorities asked anyone with information to contact the FBI.
