New York Knicks second-round draft pick Tyler Nickel is trending towards joining the team this year, foregoing a potential return to college basketball. A league source confirmed this development, which was first reported by SNY.
Nickel, selected 47th overall by the Knicks in the June draft, is eligible for a fifth year of college eligibility granted to the 2022 class following a recent ruling. He has played four seasons collegiately, with stints at North Carolina, Virginia Tech, and most recently, Vanderbilt.
Despite the option to play another college season, Nickel appears to be leaning towards starting his professional career. The Knicks extended the required tender for unsigned second-round rookies before the Aug. 5 deadline, securing his draft rights should he opt for college. Reports suggest that NIL deals in college could offer him greater financial compensation than a two-way contract with the Knicks. It remains unclear if Nickel will sign a standard contract or a two-way deal, the former potentially impacting the Knicks' ability to sign a third center to a standard contract while staying under the second apron.
Nickel, a 22-year-old forward known for his shooting, made a positive impression during the Knicks' summer league. In five games, he averaged 12.2 points and shot 41.3 percent from three-point range. His performance drew praise on social media from teammate Josh Hart.
The Knicks' other draft pick, 39th overall selection Jack Kayil, is reportedly returning to Germany to continue his professional development, with the Knicks retaining his draft rights.
