Tyler Adams Named USMNT Captain Ahead of 2030 World Cup Preparations

Veteran midfielder Tyler Adams has reclaimed the captaincy of the U.S. men's national team as the squad begins its preparations for the 2030 World Cup. Adams, 27, previously led the team as captain during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he played every minute of the tournament.

His reappointment follows the international retirement of defender Tim Ream, who served as captain during the team's recent run to the round of 16 in the 2026 World Cup before losing to Belgium. Ream, 38, announced his retirement from international soccer earlier this week and was honored by U.S. Soccer at a friendly match against Chile in his hometown of St. Louis.

U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino announced Adams's new role on Friday in Tempe, Arizona, ahead of the team's friendly match against Mexico. "Tyler is going to be our next — our new captain, our captain again," Pochettino stated. "I think we’ve been (in) a very good relationship in the last two years... he’s a perfect role model for everyone in the way that the philosophy, the future, representing that amazing country. I think he’s the player and the person that can lead that period that we have ahead."

Adams expressed his honor and gratitude for the opportunity. "I’m extremely honored and grateful for the opportunity," he said. "I think that, like Mauricio said, we’ve obviously built an amazing relationship over the past two years with all the staff, with my teammates here, going into this past World Cup. And I think as we start a new cycle, I’m excited to be able to help my teammates and the staff in any way possible in order to win, grow the federation and ultimately take that next step."

Adams has scored two goals in 60 career appearances for the USMNT, with both goals coming against Mexico. He emphasized that the captain's armband does not change his approach to leadership. "Getting the armband, it doesn’t mean anything to me in being a leader or being different from who I am," Adams said. "I’m gonna be the exact same person. I’m gonna try to lead this group into a winning culture and continue to build what we’re trying to build here. I want to represent my teammates in the best way possible. I want to represent the country in the best way possible, of course."

Adams currently plays for Bournemouth in England's Premier League, where he is in his fourth season. Prior to his time in England, he played for RB Leipzig in Germany's Bundesliga from 2018 to 2022 and for Leeds United in the Premier League during the 2022-23 season. He began his professional career in Major League Soccer with the New York Red Bulls.
