Ty Dieffenbach Steps into Spotlight as UCLA's New Quarterback

Ty Dieffenbach is stepping into the starting quarterback role for the No. 12 UCLA Bruins, taking over for Nico Iamaleava, whose season-ending knee injury has thrust the backup into the spotlight. Dieffenbach made his debut in Saturday's game against Oregon, throwing the decisive touchdown pass in a 17-15 victory.

Dieffenbach's journey to this pivotal position has been marked by resilience. During his high school years at Agoura High, he became a starter as a sophomore and navigated significant personal challenges, including his mother's battle with breast cancer and the death of a teammate. He served as a senior captain, providing stability to his team during difficult times. Even when his senior season was cut short by injury, he remained with the team to mentor his replacement.

"I believe he lives for it, man, and he’ll have that sense of quiet in him that he’s tough and this isn’t too big for him," said Dustin Croick, Dieffenbach's former coach at Agoura High. "I thought his poise was really inspiring," tight end Josh Phifer added. "Because being in the huddle and just seeing that your quarterback is not really nervous or freaking out at all and just ready to go attack makes the rest of the offense just feel comfortable too."

Dieffenbach's path to UCLA was not direct. After initially committing to UNLV, he later agreed to join Pittsburgh, but did not play during two seasons there. A transfer to Cal Poly resulted in a starting role, where he threw for 1,305 yards and nine touchdowns with nine interceptions in a 4-8 season. His connection with former Holy Cross offensive coordinator Dean Kennedy, who joined UCLA's coaching staff, led to an opportunity with the Bruins.

Dieffenbach and the Bruins, currently 5-0 overall and 3-0 in Big Ten play, are preparing to face Wisconsin on Saturday at the Rose Bowl. "He believes in himself," Croick stated. "Regardless of Pitt or Cal Poly and what happened there, he’s going to grind, he’s going to work. … I’m biased, but I think he’s going to kill it. This is the opportunity that he’s been waiting for."
