A young man and woman were fatally struck by a subway train in Downtown Manhattan early Sunday. The incident occurred near the Spring Street station shortly before 3:15 a.m., according to law-enforcement sources.
The unidentified pair, both 24 years old, were on the subway tracks when the southbound No. 4 train collided with them. Both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.
Video footage of the incident reportedly shows the two sitting on the tracks and facing the approaching train. Investigators are examining the circumstances, with initial indications suggesting the pair may not have been pushed or fallen onto the tracks. Sources have speculated that intoxication could be a factor, though no evidence has yet confirmed this.
The incident led to the shutdown of the station, and NYPD officers were observed at the scene.
