Two 16-year-old males were arrested in Brooklyn following a carjacking spree late Thursday that included an attempt to strike a police officer with a stolen vehicle, according to the NYPD.
The events began around 7:40 p.m. when the two suspects allegedly approached a 24-year-old man in Homecrest, displayed a firearm, and attempted to rob him. The victim evaded the robbery attempt, leaving the suspects empty-handed.
Shortly thereafter, the pair reportedly approached a 23-year-old man on East 15th Street and Avenue O, took his Toyota Camry at gunpoint, and fled the scene. The stolen vehicle crashed a short distance away. One of the suspects was apprehended at this point, while the other fled on foot.
This second suspect then allegedly approached a 54-year-old woman on Kimball Street near Avenue T, stole her Toyota RAV-4, and drove away. Police pursued this vehicle.
Around 8:40 p.m., officers attempted to stop the fleeing suspect by blocking the street. The driver allegedly drove onto the sidewalk, heading towards an officer. The officer discharged a firearm at the vehicle, but the suspect was not struck. The suspect continued to flee until crashing the vehicle at Pennsylvania and Wortman avenues, where they were taken into custody.
It remains unclear which of the two teens attempted to drive onto the sidewalk toward the officer. The NYPD's Force Investigation Division is reviewing the incident. One suspect faces charges including criminal possession of stolen property and obstruction of governmental administration. The other is charged with two counts of robbery.
