Two sisters and another young woman have been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the fatal stabbing of a mother of five in Del Rio, Texas. Kitty Mia Diaz, 21, and her sister, Amaya Cookie Diaz, 19, were taken into custody on Thursday following the assault.

Authorities responded to Val Verde Regional Medical Center around 2:10 p.m. after Caroline Peña, 32, arrived with multiple stab wounds. Peña was later transported to a San Antonio medical facility for emergency surgery, where she died around 9 p.m. on Thursday.

Del Rio Police Department investigators identified the suspects after reviewing surveillance footage and speaking with witnesses. Videos captured the Diaz sisters being handcuffed and placed into patrol cars. During their arrests, both sisters were observed smirking at the camera. A woman, who identified herself as their mother, confronted a person recording the arrests and requested they stop filming.

Kyandra Renee Faz, 21, was also arrested in connection with the stabbing. All three women have been charged with murder and are being held at the GEO Correctional Facility. Police stated that additional charges may be filed as the investigation progresses.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear. Friends of Peña described the incident as occurring in a busy area of the city in broad daylight, not in a secluded location. Some video footage of the assault was reportedly circulating online before being removed.

Friends remembered Peña as a selfless individual who was always willing to help others, even while raising her five children. Zelina Ochoa, a friend, recalled meeting Peña in a young parenting program. Lupita Garza, another friend, described Peña as a unique person who brought positivity to many lives.

Peña’s best friend, Christina Salinas, said she was with Peña the night before her death and had missed a call from her shortly before the incident. Peña’s oldest son is 17 and nearing graduation. Friends expressed grief over the loss, noting that Peña's children are now without their mother, while her alleged attackers will eventually be able to see their own children.
