Two people were shot in broad daylight Tuesday afternoon on a busy Manhattan street, leaving a 63-year-old woman wounded and a 21-year-old man injured, police said.
Officers responded to a 911 call at about 2:30 p.m. reporting multiple people shot at the intersection of East Broadway and Clinton Street in the Lower East Side, the NYPD said. On arrival, officers found a 63-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to her right foot and a 21-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his right leg. Both victims were taken to Bellevue Hospital and were in stable condition, according to authorities.
Investigators recovered two shell casings at the scene. It remained unclear whether the younger victim was an intended target; sources told the New York Post that the 63-year-old woman appeared to be an innocent bystander.
Police described two male suspects fleeing the scene on a bicycle after the shooting. One suspect was reported to be wearing a tan hooded shirt and the other a green hooded shirt. No arrests were reported, and the investigation was ongoing.
The NYPD is continuing to canvass the area and review any available video and witness accounts to determine what precipitated the shooting and to identify the suspects. At the time of the initial report, authorities had not released additional information about potential motives or whether the victims were known to each other.
The incident adds to a pattern of high-profile street shootings that have drawn public attention in New York City in recent years and prompted renewed scrutiny of public safety measures and policing strategies. City officials and law enforcement agencies typically urge anyone with information or footage related to shootings to contact the NYPD or call Crime Stoppers.
Anyone with information about Tuesday’s shooting is asked to contact the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers hotline. Video and witness statements could play a role in locating the suspects and establishing the sequence of events that led to the midday gunfire.
