Two runners in their 20s have died after collapsing during the Great North Run. The men, both 25-year-old males from the North East of England, became ill during Sunday's half-marathon and passed away despite the efforts of medical teams.

The cause of death for each participant has not yet been ascertained. The Great Run Company, organizers of the event, confirmed the deaths and stated that no further details would be released out of respect for the families.

"It is with deep sadness, The Great Run Company can confirm the death of two participants at yesterday's Great North Run," the company said in a statement. "The two runners, both 25-year-old males from the North East, collapsed at the event, and despite the very best efforts of our medical teams later passed away."

The organizers extended their condolences to the families and friends of the deceased and confirmed they are providing support during this difficult time.

Around 63,000 runners participated in the 45th annual Great North Run, which spans from Newcastle to South Shields. This year's event marked the first time a sitting prime minister, Andy Burnham, took part in the race. The Great North Run is recognized as the world's largest half marathon, drawing tens of thousands of participants annually.
