Two police officers were hospitalized following a collision between their unmarked patrol car and a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) in North Yorkshire on August 7. The incident occurred at 12:14 p.m. on the A64, a major road connecting York and Malton.
The officers were traveling in an unmarked Peugeot 308 when the crash took place near Barton Hill. The driver of the HGV was uninjured. Both officers sustained minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The extent of the damage to the police vehicle was significant; footage from the scene showed the car with its bumper detached, a smashed windscreen, and the left passenger door ripped off. Debris was scattered in the surrounding foliage.
Following the collision, a section of the A64 was temporarily closed to allow for the response of an air ambulance, recovery operations, and a police investigation. North Yorkshire Police have issued an appeal for witnesses and for anyone with dashcam footage from the area around the time of the incident to come forward. They have requested that individuals contact the force by dialing 101 and quoting reference number 12260152304.
This incident follows a previous collision involving an unmarked police vehicle in April, where two Metropolitan Police officers were charged after a crash in southeast London resulted in the deaths of a pregnant woman and her infant child. In that case, an unmarked police Volvo collided with the woman's car on October 17, 2024.
