Two police officers and five young men were killed in a high-speed collision on the A66 at Middlesbrough when a Volkswagen Passat driving the wrong way collided with an armed-response vehicle. The crash occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, with all seven individuals declared dead at the scene.

The two officers, PC Matthew Blades, 38, and PC Tom Clough, 37, have been identified as the casualties from the police vehicle. The five young men in the Passat were locally named as Michael Ray, Theo Rae, Cole Worthy, Jakub Matusiak, and Makai Saddington.

Authorities have indicated the incident may be linked to an online trend where individuals engage in high-speed police chases and share video footage on social media platforms like TikTok. Social media posts attributed to Makai Saddington, 18, have reportedly shown him participating in police pursuits in the months preceding the crash. It is understood that Saddington and his companions had connections to the traveller community.

The sequence of events began around 3:36 a.m. when two police cars pursued the Passat, described as 'suspicious,' through Middlesbrough's streets. The pursuit was reportedly halted by officers when the vehicle turned onto the A66. Just three minutes later, at 3:39 a.m., the Passat entered the path of a different marked armed-response vehicle that was traveling on the correct side of the road.

Cleveland Police have lowered flags to half-mast at their headquarters in tribute to the fallen officers. Chief Constable Victoria Fuller stated that the officers were “brave officers, protecting our communities and serving our residents, who didn't return home to their families at the end of their shift.” The Independent Office for Police Conduct has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.

This incident follows a similar tragedy in Ireland just days earlier, where five teenagers died in a head-on collision on the M9 motorway in County Kildare. These youths were reportedly traveling the wrong way in a stolen BMW and were allegedly filming themselves. The occupants of the other vehicle involved in that crash, including three sisters and a young boy, sustained serious injuries.

Families and friends of the five young men killed in Middlesbrough have posted tributes online. The mother of Makai Saddington's one-year-old son shared her grief, as did his aunt. Friends remembered Cole Worthy as a "massive devastation" and Theo Rae as having a "heart of gold." Michael Ray was described as a "lovely, down to earth lad," and Jakub Matusiak's sister called him her "best friend always and forever."
