Two Men Surrender After Damaging Leipzig Airport Fence
The incident, involving a car crashing through a security barrier, occurred months after a drone attack at the same airport attributed to Russia.
German police have taken into custody two men who surrendered after a security fence at Leipzig Airport was damaged. The incident occurred Sunday night, according to a statement from Leipzig police.
The investigation revealed that a 20-year-old man, through his lawyer, admitted to losing control of a car while driving in the airport vicinity the previous night and crashing through the fence. He then left the scene and arranged for the vehicle to be towed. Police noted he did not possess a driver's license.
The second man, 32, identified as the car's owner, confirmed his involvement but provided no further details, police said. The vehicle has been impounded as the investigation continues.
German authorities had been alerted to the damaged fence, discovered around 11 p.m. on Saturday. Initial findings suggested a vehicle had driven through the barrier along a public road. A search of the airport grounds by emergency teams found no sign of the vehicle or any intruders at that time.
This event follows a separate incident in August where an explosives-laden drone targeted Leipzig Airport. German authorities attributed that attack to Russia, a claim that Moscow has denied.
