Two Men Surrender After Crashing Car Through Leipzig Airport Fence

German police announced Monday that two men have surrendered to authorities following an incident where a car smashed through a security fence at Leipzig Airport. The two individuals, aged 20 and 32, turned themselves in Sunday night.

The younger man, speaking through a lawyer, stated that he lost control of the vehicle while driving in the airport vicinity the previous night, causing it to crash through the fence. He admitted to leaving the scene and arranging for the car to be towed. Police noted he did not possess a driver's license.

The 32-year-old man identified himself as the car's owner but provided no further details, according to the police statement. The vehicle has been impounded, and the investigation is ongoing.

German authorities had been investigating how a significant hole was created in the airport's perimeter fence. The damage was discovered around 11 p.m. on Saturday. Initial findings suggested a vehicle had driven through the fence from a publicly accessible road.

Emergency teams that subsequently searched the airport grounds did not locate the vehicle or any intruders at the time of discovery.

This incident occurs in the context of a previous security concern at the same airport. In August, an attack involving a drone carrying explosives targeted Leipzig Airport. German officials attributed this attack to Russia, a claim that Moscow has denied.

German police officers investigate a fence breach at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Schkeuditz. Investigators inspect a damaged airport fence section next to a fire truck and firefighters. Airport firefighters load a seized sign into a police vehicle at Leipzig/Halle Airport.
