Two Men Bailed After Security Breach at UK Air Base Used by US Military

Two Latvian men arrested after a fence was breached at a Cambridgeshire RAF base have been released on bail.

Ministry of Defence Police (MDP) security patrols at RAF Molesworth, which is used by the US military and NATO for intelligence operations, discovered an abandoned vehicle around 10 p.m. BST on Wednesday. Searches later located a small breach in the perimeter fence.

The pair, aged 36 and 32, who reside in the UK, were subsequently arrested inside the base.

They were taken to a Cambridgeshire police station and have since been granted bail under strict conditions, according to the Metropolitan Police. The force's Counter Terrorism Policing London is leading the investigation.

Cdr Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, stated that while they are aware of recent heightened interest and concern surrounding military sites, there is currently nothing to suggest this incident is linked to events at RAF Fairford the previous week.

Initially, the men were arrested on suspicion of trespass on a prohibited site and criminal damage, with Cambridgeshire Police assisting in the search. They were later re-arrested on suspicion of entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the UK, under Section 4 of the National Security Act.
