Two people died early Saturday morning when a McLaren sports car crashed into a tree in Irvine, California, splitting the vehicle and causing it to erupt in flames. The incident occurred around 12:20 a.m. at the intersection of Culver Drive and Deerfield Avenue.
Police and the Orange County Fire Authority responded to reports of a single-vehicle collision. Investigators believe the 2019 McLaren was stopped at a traffic light at the intersection. When the light turned green, the driver accelerated northbound at a high speed, apparently losing control of the vehicle.
The car reportedly struck a curb before colliding with a tree. The impact caused the McLaren to break into two pieces and subsequently catch fire. Two occupants were found dead within the wreckage.
Authorities have not yet released the identities or ages of the deceased. The circumstances surrounding the crash are currently under investigation, and it has not been determined if any other vehicles were involved.
