Two Killed in Plane Crash Near Northern California Airport
A Van's RV-7A aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff, initiating a fire and prompting an investigation by the NTSB.
Two people died on Wednesday when a small plane crashed near the Petaluma Municipal Airport in Sonoma County, California. The aircraft, identified as a Van's RV-7A, went down around 10:45 a.m. local time shortly after departing the airport.
Emergency crews arriving at the scene found the aircraft engulfed in flames. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the crash and stated that the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation, with the FAA providing assistance.
An NTSB investigator is expected at the crash site to document the wreckage before the plane is transported to a secure facility for further examination. The investigation will include a review of flight tracking data, air traffic control communications, aircraft maintenance records, weather conditions, the pilot's flight experience, and witness statements. A preliminary report is anticipated within 30 days, with a final report potentially taking 12 to 24 months.
Witnesses reported hearing engine sputtering and seeing the plane appear to lose altitude shortly after takeoff. One witness described seeing the aircraft attempt to turn back toward the airport before crashing into a field near the Rooster Run Golf Course and erupting in flames. The Van's RV-7A is listed by the FAA as an eligible amateur-built aircraft kit.
