Two Jailed for £8.5 Million Teeth Whitening Scam Funding Lavish Lifestyles

Two individuals, Ian Barnes, 53, and Alastair Ramage, 44, have been sentenced to a combined eight years and 10 months in prison for their involvement in an £8.5 million teeth whitening scam. The pair used proceeds from the fraudulent scheme to fund a lavish lifestyle, including extensive travel and plans for unique residential developments.

Barnes and Ramage operated through two companies, UK Teeth Whitening Ltd and IBAR Trading Ltd, based in Hong Kong and the Seychelles, respectively. They were found to have knowingly imported and sold teeth whitening products containing dangerously high levels of hydrogen peroxide. The illicit funds were laundered through 118 bank accounts, credit cards, and cryptocurrency trading platforms, with over £3.4 million passing through the now-defunct Euro Pacific Bank in Puerto Rico.

During a sentencing at Liverpool Crown Court, it was revealed that the men had spent approximately £100,000 on holidays. Their extravagant spending also included £16,000 on a baseball cap and more than £500 on an ice cream sundae reminiscent of one featured in the movie 'Home Alone.' Recovered text messages indicated plans to build neighboring villas in Florida, complete with swimming pools shaped like teeth.

Investigators from His Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) also seized luxury watches, diamond jewelry, and a gold bar from the convicted pair. WhatsApp messages retrieved from their phones showed the men expressing callous disregard for their actions and awareness of the legal risks involved.

In one exchange, Barnes reportedly wrote, "In a few hours we’ll be in 1st class, F*** the peasants." Another message from Ramage acknowledged the potential for lengthy prison sentences if caught, stating, "We’re talking millions and years in jail."

Barnes, originally from Formby, received a sentence of four years and four months. Ramage, who had relocated to Portugal, was sentenced to four years and six months. Zoe Gascoyne, Director of HMRC’s Fraud Investigation Service, stated that the department would work to recover the stolen funds. "Their messages show complete disregard for the hard-working majority who pay the taxes that fund our public services," Gascoyne said.
