Two individuals were found dead in Marin County after an overnight canoeing trip on Tomales Bay, authorities reported Sunday. One of the deceased has been identified as 36-year-old Casey Flynn Melia of San Francisco.

Melia and a companion departed their campsite shortly before midnight on Saturday for a canoe excursion. They did not return as expected on Sunday morning, prompting their camping party to contact emergency services and initiate a search-and-rescue operation. The U.S. Coast Guard located the first canoeist unresponsive in the water and transported them to Bodega Bay, where they were pronounced dead. Search teams subsequently found Melia near Hog Island. Personnel from the National Park Service recovered his body and brought it to Sacramento Landing, where he was also pronounced deceased.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear. Investigators are working to determine how the two individuals ended up in the water and what transpired during their trip. The Sonoma County Sheriff-Coroner Bureau is investigating the death of the first victim, while the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, the Coast Guard, and the National Park Service are conducting a joint investigation into both deaths. Post-mortem examinations and toxicology tests for Melia are scheduled for later in the week. The official causes and manners of death for both victims are pending.

Tomales Bay, located along California's Point Reyes coast, is described as a remote area that can present hazards to paddlers, especially when navigating small watercraft at night. This incident follows a previous fatal event on the bay in March, where a woman died after her kayak overturned near Point Reyes. The identity of the second canoeist has not yet been released.
