Two people, a 27-year-old woman and a 5-month-old girl, died after a boat capsized in New York Harbor on Saturday night, officials reported. Twelve other individuals were rescued and treated for minor injuries.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) and the Fire Department (FDNY) responded to a call shortly before 10:30 p.m. near Liberty Island. Emergency divers and first responders arrived on the scene following the incident.
The two victims were transported to NYU Langone Health Brooklyn, where they were pronounced dead. The 12 rescued individuals were taken to local hospitals.
The circumstances leading to the boat capsizing are under investigation.
