Two Dead in Massive Ukrainian Drone Attack on Moscow Region Oil Refinery
Authorities report two deaths and an oil refinery hit in what they describe as one of the largest Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian territory.
Two people were killed and a Moscow oil refinery sustained a direct hit during a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack on the region surrounding Russia's capital. Russian authorities reported thwarting the attack, claiming to have downed more than 1,600 drones, including 450 targeting Moscow.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that several drones reached the oil refinery, with one impacting an apartment building. He asserted that the attack, timed to coincide with Russia's final day of parliamentary elections, failed in its objective to disrupt the voting process. Reuters witnesses reported hearing explosions in Moscow and observing smoke plumes emanating from the refinery.
The extent of damage to the refinery, which processed 11.6 million metric tons of oil in 2024, was not immediately clear. Ukrainian officials have not commented on the incident, and both nations maintain they do not target civilian populations.
In the wider Moscow region, Governor Andrei Vorobyov reported that beyond the two fatalities, 400 residents, including 70 children, were evacuated from a 21-story apartment block in the Ramenskoye district following damage to nearby homes.
This incident occurs amidst ongoing strikes on energy infrastructure by both Ukraine and Russia, despite an earlier announcement by President Donald Trump that an agreement had been reached for both sides to cease such attacks.
