Two Dead, 35 Injured in Georgia Block Party Shooting

Investigators in Georgia are seeking a suspect in a mass shooting that occurred early Sunday morning, leaving two people dead and 35 injured. The violence erupted during a block party in Vienna, a rural community in the southern part of the state, where approximately 1,000 people had gathered.

More than 50 shots were fired, according to officials. Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene, and another 25 were taken to nearby hospitals, with some in critical condition. The victims ranged in age from 14 to 51.

The incident took place around 1:30 a.m. local time during a Dooly High School homecoming celebration. While not a school-sponsored event, the school issued a statement expressing condolences to those affected. "Our hearts are with the families grieving the loss of loved ones, those who were injured, and everyone affected by this tragedy," the statement read.

Deputies from the Dooly County Sheriff's Office were already present at the event due to the anticipated large crowd. Sheriff Craig Peavy reported that initial reports described sounds like fireworks before it became clear that people were being shot. As authorities responded, crowds scattered while officers worked to reach the injured.

One witness described the gunfire to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution as sounding "like a machine gun." Upon arrival, authorities discovered several injured individuals. The two deceased victims, identified as men aged 20 and 23, were found several blocks from the primary shooting location on Pine Street.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigations is joining the investigation at the request of the Dooly County Sheriff's Office, describing the operation as active and ongoing. The Medical Examiner's Office will conduct autopsies for both victims. No motive for the shooting has been released, and no arrests have been made.
