Two Dead, 10 Injured After Truck Plows Into Kansas Youth Soccer Game

A pickup truck plowed into a youth soccer game in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday afternoon, resulting in the deaths of a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man, and injuring 10 others. The driver, a 34-year-old woman, crashed into one of the fields at the Stryker Sports Complex just before 3 p.m. local time.

Erica Case, who was watching her nine-year-old son play soccer, described the terrifying moments as the truck approached. She heard an engine revving, followed by several "boom" sounds, and then saw debris, including what she believed to be people, flying through the air as the truck sped across the field. "The moment that I realized that it wasn't gunshots, that that was bodies, I lost it," Case told NBC News. "I lost it because it wasn't just adults, it was also children."

Six-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer were killed in the incident. Ten other individuals, five of whom were children, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to the hospital. Police have not yet released the identity of the driver or a motive for the crash.

Witnesses recounted the chaos that ensued. David Griekspoor, who was at the complex with his nephew, initially heard sounds similar to gunfire. He then saw the truck moving through a group of people. In the immediate aftermath, parents rushed to help the injured. A mother who identified herself as a nurse began attending to victims, with Case helping to move her son to safety amidst the confusion.

Emergency services arrived on the scene approximately 10 minutes after the crash, but bystanders had already begun administering aid. "There are a lot of silent heroes that I know experienced much worse that I did, having to do mouth-to-mouth or CPR on somebody that'd been ran over by a truck," Case added.

The Stryker Sports Complex is a city-run facility that hosts numerous youth sporting events. The incident has left the community in shock as they grapple with the tragic loss of life and the injuries sustained by others during what should have been a routine sporting event.
